Tropical rain forests are characterized by the greatest diversity of species. These forests occur near the equator, there are two types of seasons dry and rainy the winter is absent. The day is a twelve hour span of daylight and only varies little. The temperature ranges from 75° to 85° F and only varies a little throughout the year. The temperature will most likely never go above 93° even in the hottest weather. The average humidity is around 77% to 88% the tropical forests. The warmest and coldest months of the year only differ by 8 degrees. The precipitation in the tropical rain forest has no less then 170 inches of rainfall per year but could reach around 400 inches. This precipitation is distrusted throughout the 12 months of the year, this keeps the air moist this helps both the animals and plants increase their survival rate. The tropical forests only cover 7% of earths surface and surprisingly produce about 40% of earths oxygen.
The gorilla is a very important feature to the tropical forests, weighing in at about 150-500 pounds he stands no more than six feet. Gorillas can climb trees, but are usually found on the group in groups of up to 30 individuals. These troops are organized according to fascinating social structures, troops are led by one dominant, older adult male. Many troops also include many younger males, some being females, and their offspring.

The Bronx Zoo is home to over 20 very interesting friends, the western lowland gorillas live in an enclosure about 6.5 acres filled with plenty of trees and bushes to hide and play around. The temperature of the Bronx Zoo is always changing, because of the placement of the zoo the animals experience all four seasons, fall, winter spring and summer. The winters we experience here in New York are not the same as the "winters" in the tropical forests, the temperature drop down into the teens and twenty's. The animals are not used to this type of weather, they are used to the more wet and higher temperatures, they live in a region where it is normally around 80° year round.
The gorilla is an omnivore witch means they eat plenty of roots, shoots, fruit, tree bark, pulp and wild celery. In the thick forests they live in the troops (the group of gorillas) find plenty of food for their vegetarian diet. The gorillas in the zoo are fed food similar to what they would eat in the wild, an assortment of fruits and vegetables. The gorillas diet might change slightly according to whats in season but other than that it is kept very similar to the diet of wild gorillas.
